Annual Meeting of the Hawaii-Pacific Chapter of the Medical Library Association
Hawaii-Pacific Chapter of the Medical Library Association
Annual Meeting
John A. Burns School of Medicine
Health Sciences Library
March 12, 2010
The Annual Meeting of the Hawaii-Pacific Chapter of the Medical Library Association (HPCMLA) was held at the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), Health Sciences Library.
Members of the Chapter were fortunate to have Kay Deeney, Education Coordinator, National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Pacific Southwest Region (NN/LM PSRML), Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library, Center for the Health Sciences, UCLA, give an Advanced PubMed class: “PubMed Clinics of North America: a problem-based approach to PubMed searching”.
The class focused on a problem-based approach in learning to search the redesigned PubMed database. Through case studies, group exercises and hands-on practice, participants became more efficient PubMed searchers. The class was geared for intermediate and advanced PubMed searchers. We earned 3.5 continuing education credits for the class was 3.5 hours long, and at MLA ’10, which will be in Washington D.C. May 21-26, it will be a 4-hour class, you will earn 4 CE credits, and will cost $315!
The hands-on practice in JABSOM’s computer lab was very helpful, especially with Kay giving the class and being there to give us pointers in searching.
Julie Kwan, the Acting Associate Director of the NN/LM PSRML, and the Library Network Coordinator, gave the Regional Medial Library Update. Very interesting talk, and she again emphasized the importance of libraries doing Disaster Planning. As the incoming Chair of HPCMLA, I am hoping we can begin doing this planning among the medical libraries of HPCMLA.
We had lunch at the Pavilion Café, Honolulu Academy of Arts, which everyone who attended, always enjoys.
Mary Ryan, the Immediate Past President of MLA spoke: “MLA Update: Reflect and Connect” on her past year as MLA President.
The HPC-MLA Annual Business was held in the afternoon. We approved the 2009 Annual Business Meeting minutes, the Treasurer gave his annual report of HPCMLA’s accounts, the Immediate Chair, Carolyn Dennison summarized the 2009 Chapter events for the year:
-two MLA web casts
-MLA 2009 Annual Conference in Honolulu, Hawaii
-Mabel Trafford, Co-chair of the Local Assistance Committee for MLA 2009 said a few words on the planning for the meeting, beginning in 2008.
-Holiday Lunch
-Bylaws Updated
AHIP members
Committee Reports were given by:
-Membership Chair
-Continuing Education Chair
-Bylaws Chair
-Nominating Chair
Meeting was adjourned and members enjoyed refreshments and networking with each other.

Updated Library Guide 19
The new 6th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association was published last year. Among the more important changes to take place is the implementation of the DOI (digital object identifier) standard for online article identification. The APA now recommends that you use the unique DOI alphanumeric string in your citation whenever it is available. Atherton Library recently updated Library Guide 19 - APA Style Research Paper Formats to reflect the changes that have taken place. Please consult this guide for help in formatting your paper and citing resources.
